Naina Desai's Project

Some kitchen projects begin with a complete redesign. For Naina Desai, the goal was far simpler: elevate an already well-designed kitchen with surfaces that could bring warmth, character, and practicality into everyday family life.

Living in St Albans with three energetic children, Naina knew exactly how demanding a kitchen can be. Between school mornings, weekend baking sessions, homework projects, and constant entertaining, the space was already the busiest room in the house. The cabinetry worked beautifully, the layout flowed naturally, and the island occupied a perfect position at the centre of the room.

What remained was finding the right worktop.

After exploring numerous materials and visiting more than one worktop showroom in the UK, Naina kept returning to the same conclusion. She wanted something that felt luxurious without becoming delicate. It needed to look impressive enough for entertaining guests while remaining practical enough for everyday family use.

That search eventually led her to Mono Calacatta Borghini.

The bold yet elegant veining immediately stood out. Rather than overwhelming the room, the design brought movement and depth to the neutral cabinetry while creating a natural visual connection between the island, perimeter worktops, and splashback areas.

The island quickly became the defining feature of the kitchen. Visible from almost every corner of the open-plan space, it now anchors the entire room while providing a generous surface for food preparation, casual dining, family conversations, and everything in between.

One detail Naina particularly appreciated was how the veining was carefully positioned throughout the installation. The continuous flow across different sections creates a cohesive appearance that feels intentionally designed rather than simply assembled.

Natural light pours into the room through the large roof lanterns and glazed doors, highlighting different aspects of the surface throughout the day. Morning light emphasises the softer detailing, while evening lighting brings out the dramatic movement within the pattern, giving the kitchen a subtly changing character from one moment to the next.

The result proves that a kitchen doesn’t always need a complete renovation to feel transformed. Sometimes the biggest impact comes from selecting the right material and allowing it to become the focal point of the space.
