Located in the family-oriented area of Caversham, Reading, this contemporary kitchen was thoughtfully designed for Dutch couple Thomas and Elise Van Dijk, who both commute daily to London, where they work together at an international trading and consultancy firm. With two young children and demanding professional lives, the couple envisioned a home that could balance calm modern living with the warmth and practicality required for everyday family life.

Natural light became a defining element of the design, flooding the space through large surrounding windows and enhancing the soft neutral palette throughout the kitchen. The bright quartz worktops and waterfall island introduce a refined sense of elegance while helping the room feel open, airy, and effortlessly inviting. Delicate veining across the splashback subtly adds texture and movement without overpowering the clean contemporary aesthetic.

Warm timber cabinetry and slatted oak detailing were carefully paired with soft black accents to create depth and contrast within the light-filled space. Minimal pendant lighting and understated metallic fixtures elevate the overall atmosphere while maintaining the relaxed and welcoming character the couple wanted for their family home.

At the centre of the design, the spacious island was created as a multifunctional social hub — perfect for busy weekday breakfasts, children’s homework afternoons, and relaxed evenings entertaining friends. Every material and finish was thoughtfully selected to reflect the couple’s modern lifestyle while ensuring the kitchen remained timeless, practical, and visually refined.

The final result is a beautifully balanced contemporary kitchen that combines warmth, sophistication, and functionality, creating a bright family-focused space perfectly tailored to the rhythm of modern living.
