Mateusz Kowalski's Project

Some kitchens make a statement through colour. Others rely on scale. This Bristol project took a different approach, using carefully selected surfaces to create a sense of balance, continuity, and understated luxury throughout the space.

Completed in 2026 for homeowner Mateusz Kowalski, the project centred around the installation of new quartz worktops, a waterfall island, and matching full-height splashbacks. While the layout itself remained unchanged, the surfaces were chosen to become the defining feature of the room.

The island immediately commands attention. Wrapped in quartz on all visible sides, it creates a sculptural centrepiece that anchors the entire kitchen. Rather than feeling decorative, the waterfall detailing gives the island a strong architectural presence that complements the clean lines of the surrounding cabinetry.

One of the most important design decisions was extending the quartz vertically behind the hob. Instead of introducing separate wall finishes or tiles, the continuous splashback creates a seamless visual flow across the room. This approach allows the natural movement within the surface to remain uninterrupted, helping the kitchen feel calmer, cleaner, and more cohesive.

After researching several materials and comparing different best quartz worktop options, Mateusz selected quartz for its ability to combine elegant design with long-term practicality. The subtle movement within the surface introduces character without overwhelming the space, while its durability makes it ideal for everyday use.

The finished installation proves that impactful design does not always require structural changes. Through the combination of a waterfall island, matching splashbacks, and carefully considered detailing, the worktops became the element that defines the entire kitchen.

Testimonial

The waterfall island was always the feature we were most excited about, and seeing it completed exceeded our expectations. The continuity between the worktops and splashbacks gives the kitchen a level of finish we simply couldn’t have achieved with any other material.
